The Manufacturer

Stilnovo

Founded in Milan in 1946, Stilnovo became one of postwar Italy's defining lighting houses. Gio Ponti reviewed it in Domus within its first years, and it went on to shape how an entire generation of Italian designers thought about light.

Founding & History

A "new style" for a country rebuilding itself

Stilnovo was founded in Milan in 1946 by Bruno Gatta, just as Italy was starting to face postwar reconstruction. The name means "new style," borrowed from the Dolce Stil Novo, the 13th-century literary movement of Dante and his circle, and repurposed by Gatta for a new visual language in lighting. His brother Paolo joined in 1949, and together they formalized the company as Stilnovo Srl, opening a showroom on Milan's Via Durini.

By 1965, production had outgrown the city and moved to a larger site in Lainate, on Milan's outskirts. The company stayed in the Gatta family. Bruno's son Dino later led a new phase built on collaborations with major Italian designers, and it ran until things
went quiet in the early 1990s. In 2019, Stilnovo was bought and relaunched by Linea Light Group, which still produces the brand today, including faithful re-editions of its historic designs.

The Design Approach

Bruno Gatta, and a company built on new materials

Bruno Gatta (1904–1976) founded Stilnovo with a clear instinct.
Postwar Italy needed a lighting language suited to the moment,
functional and unpretentious but genuinely inventive. Under his
direction, Stilnovo's early reputation was built on experimenting with
new industrial materials and streamlined forms, produced with real
manufacturing discipline rather than one-off craft.

In the 1950s, much of Stilnovo's output was designed in-house, under designer Angelo Gaetano Sciolari. As the company grew through the postwar boom, Gatta opened the door wider to outside architects and designers. That shift defined Stilnovo's second, most
celebrated era.

"Reviewed in Domus by Gio Ponti within its first years, and awarded a Compasso d'Oro for the Braccio lamp in 1955."
